Are you ready to tow your trailer out on your next big trip?
An important part of towing is knowing the correct trailer hitch ball for the hitch. The ball allows the trailer to turn freely while towing and is available in a variety of diameters, weights, and lengths to ensure a proper, safe fit with your vehicle.
The Standard Trailer Hitch Ball Sizes
There are four standard tow ball sizes: 1-7/8", 2", 2-5/16" and 3". These dimensions refer to the diameter of the tow ball. Standardized tow ball sizes make coupling and towing easier.
Four Key Measurements of Trailer Balls
The ball diameter refers to the diameter of the trailer itself. The shank length refers to the total distance of the threaded rod. The shank diameter refers to the diameter of the threaded rod, and the rise refers to the height of the trailer ball from its base.
Most Common Trailer Ball Size
Probably the most common hitch ball size is the 2-inch ball. This is because a 2-inch trailer ball is best suited for most Class III trailers, which are the most popular trailer hitches.
Typical weight ratings for Class III trailer hitches:
Maximum gross trailer weight: 3,500 lbs to 8,000 lbs
Maximum tongue weight: 300 lbs to 800 lbs
Size of Travel Trailer Hitch Ball
The hitch ball used to tow most travel trailers is a 2-inch or 2-5/16 inch tow ball. Travel trailers weigh from 3500 lbs to 10000 lbs or more, while the weight class of 2-inch to 2-5/16 inch ball provides a perfect match. In addition, many travel trailers are towed using a weight distribution hitch. Most WD hitches come standard with a 2-5/16 inch ball.
That said, every towing setup is different, and there is no one universal tow ball. For your own towing setup, make sure you choose the ball that best fits your connector, ball mounting and weight requirements.
